We think South Indians have it the best way. The best of the spices, the best of seafood extracted from the belly of deep blue sea that encircles it and the healthiest way of cooking their food. When we think of South Indian food, a film of delectable looking fare runs in front of our eyes, consisting of steamed idlis, dosas, coastal curries and the infamous tangy sambhar. Usually South Indian food has to share the space with other cuisines but there are many restaurants dedicated to exploring this wonderful cuisine exclusively. One such place is ‘Savya Rasa’, situated in Koregaon Park, Pune and delights its patrons with a spectacular South Indian menu, served in charming lovely ambience. Pune is all the more better for Savya Rasa’s presence.

The menu of Savya Rasa is a colourful varied one. It goes beyond dosas and sambhars and includes other regional cuisines from Southern India as well. The dishes are adapted from Mangalorean, Kerala, Kogunadu, Malabar, Nasrani and Chettinad kitchens and complied in one big menu. Just one trip to Savya Rasa is not going to satisfy you. There is just so much to offer. Start digging into the first course with, thakkali sevai, kongu yeral varuval, thulasi vadai, karandi omelette, asari kozhi, sola saapadu urundai, nippatu settu and kalan perattal. Accompany your starters with a glass of neer moru, spiced buttermilk or paanagam, a sweet jaggery drink. Commence into the second course armed with kambu dosai or avarai paruppu saadam. Devour curries like, karipala kozhumbu, murungakkal vazhaipoo kuzhambu, vellai kozhi kuzhambu, viral meen kuzhambu and pollachi kozhi kozhambu. Soak the leftover curries with a traditional rice dish, avarai paruppu daadam.

Savya Rasa dazzles you with a plethora of sweet options, from kumbuda halwa to elaneer pudding to beniyan with palani panchamirtham to seembu paal. They even organize fun food festivals which the regulars die for. Finish with a hot filter kaapi (read: coffee) as the final touch. To reach Savya Rasa, walk on to a flight of stairs and enter a colonial style restaurant. There is a strong South-Indian feel to the space, elevated by dark teakwood furnishings, Kalamkari paintings, traditional pillars and vintage traditional theme. The décor is enchanting and feels like somebody’s well-kept home. Bill might shock you a little but be assured Savya Rasa is worth every penny.
